Cargill has issued multiple recalls for thousands of pounds of ground beef due to possible E. coli contamination over the last two months.

Following a recall of more than 130,000 pounds of ground beef last week, the United States Department of Agriculture is now warning shoppers that the raw meat was sold nationwide at some of the largest big-box retailers and supermarkets around—including Target, Aldi, and Sam's Club.

The USDA's Food Safety and Inspection Service first issued a warning and a recall notice on Sept. 19, outlining how 66 tons of ground beef products made by Colorado-based manufacturer Cargill Meat Solutions had already sickened 17 people and killed one due to E. coli sickness. Cargill Meat Solutions has issued more than one recall notice for beef over the last two months, including a major recall that affected Publix shoppers over Labor Day Weekend.

The latest batch of affected ground beef has been sold nationwide at the following stores, according to the USDA: Meijer, Safeway, Albertson's, and Target. The product in question was shipped regionally it to Aldi stores in Iowa, Illinois, Kansas, Minnesota, Missouri, Oklahoma, Nebraska, and Wisconsin—in California, the USDA reports the beef was also sold at Pak N Save, Vons supermarkets, and FoodMaxx.

But what may cause you to think twice about cooking with ground beef in your kitchen right now is the fact that the USDA says more retailers, including independent stores and smaller regional chains, could still have contaminated beef on shelves. And because the very first Cargill recall involved items that were sold in July, there's a chance you may have put ground beef in your freezer that could put you at risk of developing E. coli poisoning.

Shoppers are asked to check their ground beef to ensure the product isn't part of the recall—the USDA has a full list of all 12 affected packaged beef products right here. If you happen to have beef in your kitchen that's on the list, do not eat it—throw it out or bring it back to the supermarket for a full refund.

A previous investigation into this burgeoning E. coli outbreak showed that many victims fell ill in July, but this latest recall from Cargill means that the risk is still real for home cooks everywhere.

The U.S. Department of Agriculture released a list of stores that sold the recalled beef products:

Aldi (Stores in Iowa, Illinois, Kansas, Minnesota, Missouri, Nebraska, Oklahoma, and Wisconsin)

Vons (Stores in California)

Pak N Save (Stores in California)

Cargill Meat Solutions issued the recall on Sept. 19.

The beef products were identified after an investigation into an E. coli outbreak, which had resulted in 17 illnesses and one death since Aug. 16, the USDA&rsquos Food Safety and Inspection Service (FSIS) said in a statement.

Each patient had consumed ground beef products purchased at various retail stores that were supplied by Cargill Meat Solutions, according to FSIS.

The items carry an &ldquoEST. 86R&rdquo label inside the USDA mark of inspection, and were produced and packaged on June 21.

WASHINGTON — Last week, Cargill Meat Solutions recalled more than 132,000 pounds of ground beef due to possible E. coli contamination after one person died and 17 have reported feeling ill.

Now, officials have determined the beef was sold nationwide at stores like Aldi’s, Target and Sam’s Club.

According to a news release from the company, the ground beef products were produced and packaged on June 21. The death and illnesses happened from July 5 to July 25.

The Food Safety and Inspection Service cited concern that customers may have frozen the contaminated meat in their freezers and advises customers to check to see if their ground beef could be part of this recall.

The USDA considers this a high risk situation.

The ground beef was distributed to Aldi’s in Missouri, Kansas, Iowa, Illinois, Minnesota, Nebraska, Oklahoma and Wisconsin. It was also distributed to Target locations nationwide and Sam’s Club locations in North Carolina, Ohio and Virginia, along with several other grocery chains not located in the metro.

The FSIS learned of the E. coli investigation on Aug. 16. The FSIS, Centers for Disease Control and other state public health and agriculture partners found that the beef was the probably source of the illnesses.

The ground beef products, produced and packaged on June 21, have the number “EST. 86R” printed inside the USDA mark of inspection.

The following products have now been recalled due to possible E. coli contamination:

The U.S. Department of Agriculture has released a list of retail locations and states who may have received some of the 132,000 pounds of ground beef recently recalled over a suspected E. coli outbreak.

Sam’s Clubs in Ohio were on the distribution list, which also includes Meijer, Safeway and Targets nationwide.

Cargill Meat Solutions recalled the beef after the one person died and 17 were sickened. The beef was produced and packaged at Cargill Meat Solutions in Fort Morgan on June 21 and shipped to retailers nationwide.

The products include 3-, 10- and 20-pound (1.3-, 4.5- and 9-kilogram) packages of ground beef under the Our Certified, Excel, Sterling Silver, Certified and Fire River Farms brands with July 11 use or freeze by dates.

The beef was distributed to the following locations:
– Aldi Stores in Iowa, Illinois, Kansas, Minnesota, Missouri, Nebraska, Oklahoma, and Wisconsin
– FoodMaxx stores in California
– Meijer nationwide
– Pak N Save stores in California
– Safeway/Albertson’s nationwide
– Sam’s Club stores in North Carolina, Ohio, and Virginia
– Target nationwide
– Vons stores in California

Regulators warned that people should also check for the products in their freezers. They advise throwing the products away or returning them to the location of purchase.

In a statement, Cargill previously said all of the affected products have been removed from supermarkets. Food safety teams are reviewing the Fort Morgan facility and others “to ensure we continue to deliver safe food,” the statement said.

“We were distressed to learn a fatality may be related to an E.coli contamination of one of our products,” it said. “Our hearts go out to the families and individuals affected by this issue.”

The USDA’s Food Safety and Inspection Service did not release information about the people who died or became ill, including locations.

The Cargill plant had a smaller recall of Excel ground beef in August, but no illnesses had been reported at that time.

Most people infected with E. coli develop diarrhea and vomiting. More severe infections can lead to kidney failure.

More than 130,000 tons of ground beef sold nationwide has been recalled because of fears of E. coli contamination.

Cargill Meat Solutions issued the recall of ground beef products made from the chuck portion of a carcass that may be contaminated with the bacteria, the U.S. Department of Agriculture announced.

The USDA's Food Safety and Inspection Service said the beef was sent to nationwide retailers, including Sam's Club, Target and Albertson's. The recall of ground beef delivered to Aldi's — which has stores in Texas — was limited to Illinois, Iowa, Missouri, Kansas, Minnesota, Oklahoma, Wisconsin and Nebraska.

At least one death and 17 illnesses that were reported from July 5-25 have been linked to the tainted ground beef, the USDA said.

The beef was packaged June 21 and includes these descriptions and these labels.

Most people infected with this type of E. coli, Escherichia coli O26, develop vomiting and diarrhea that is often bloody. Most people recover within a week, but some develop a more severe infection, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.


Recall issued for salad products sold at Aldi, Walmart, Sam's Club, other stores

(11/21/2019) - A New Jersey company is recalling about 97,271 pounds of salad products sold at Aldi, Walmart, Target and other stores throughout Michigan because they may be contaminated with E. coli, according to the U.S. Department of Agriculture’s Food Safety and Inspection Service.

The recall announced on Thursday says that salad products that contain meat or poultry may be contaminated with E. coli. The products were produced from Oct. 14 through Oct. 16.

The products subject to the recall bear establishment number “EST. 18502B” inside the USDA mark of inspection.

The contamination was discovered after a foodborne illness outbreak investigation in Maryland. Another 22 states are affected by the recall, according to the USDA.


How Long Can You Safely Store Ground Beef in the Freezer?

Say you’re making meatloaf for an impromptu get-together and you need ground beef. You don’t have time to run to the grocery store, but you remember that there are several pounds stashed in your freezer.

You pull out the ground beef, and realize that you forgot to label and date it. You have no idea how old it is. What do you do? Assume the ground beef is probably fine, or throw it out just to be safe?

Foodborne illness is no joke. And with the most recent ground beef recall—which involved 2.1 million pounds due to salmonella concerns—fresh on our minds, following safe handling practices is more important than ever right now.

Ideally, you should always label and date any food that you plan to freeze. But if you run across something that doesn’t have a date, you may be surprised to know that this doesn’t necessarily mean it’s unsafe to eat.

What’s far more important is the temperature of your freezer. In order to effectively kill any bacteria, yeast, or mold, your freezer must be set to 0°F or colder. With that said, as long as food is continuously stored at 0°F or colder, it will always be safe to eat.

In fact, the main issue for properly frozen food is freshness and quality. According to the FDA’s freezer storage guidelines, the optimal storage time for frozen ground beef is 3 to 4 months. The same goes for any type of ground meat, including hamburger meat and ground turkey, pork, veal, or chicken.

So, to answer the original question—yes, you technically can cook and eat the ground beef that’s been sitting in your freezer, but that doesn’t mean that you should. Instead, learn the signs that your ground beef may be past its prime so you’ll be able to tell if the flavor and texture have been compromised. According to the USDA’s Freezing and Food Safety guide, three potential signs to look for are freezer burn, color changes, and ice crystals.

With that said, don’t risk serving your dinner guests subpar meatloaf. If you’re worried, toss it out and order pizza instead. But the next time you purchase fresh ground beef, keep in mind that you can safely store it in the refrigerator for 1 to 2 days. If you aren’t certain you’ll use it within that time frame, it’s best to go ahead and freeze it.

Ground Beef Freezing Tips

Always label ground beef with the date and weight before freezing. Freeze large quantities of ground beef in half-pound or one-pound portions so you can defrost the exact amount you need.

Check the temperature of your freezer periodically to ensure that it’s set to 0°F or colder. (If you don’t own a freezer thermometer, you can order one from Amazon.)

To prevent freezer burn, wrap the ground beef in wax paper or freezer paper.

The safest way to thaw frozen ground beef is in the refrigerator. Never leave it on the countertop to thaw as this exposes it to the danger zone (40°F to 140°F), the temperature range where bacteria can grow. Cook or refreeze the beef within 1 to 2 days.

If you lose power, avoid opening the freezer door. Depending on how full your freezer is, frozen food lasts for 1 to 2 days (as long as the door stays closed.)

Lastly, stay up to date on food recalls by subscribing to the Food Safety and Inspection Service's email alerts. For big recalls like the recent ground beef one, get into the habit of double-checking your freezer for the affected food, as this is an easy place to overlook.
